The Evolution of Fire Training Towers

Evolution-of-fire-training-towers

In the dynamic world of firefighting, staying ahead of the curve is not just an aspiration but a necessity. As fire departments and districts strive to enhance their emergency response preparedness, the evolution of fire training towers plays a crucial role. In this journey from traditional to technologically advanced, WHP Trainingtowers™ stands out for our commitment to innovation and safety.

Repurposed Containers and Basic Structures

In the early days of fire training, firefighters utilized repurposed shipping containers as fire training buildings. However, these containers had their limitations – they were easily damaged, posed potential risks due to unknown chemicals in the paint, and required frequent maintenance. Recognizing the need for a safer and more durable alternative, WHP Trainingtowers entered the scene with an innovative spirit and a commitment to quality.

WHP Trainingtowers: A Legacy of Innovation

Founded over 40 years ago by Bernie Padgett, WHP Trainingtowers has been a trailblazer in the field of fire training infrastructure. Padgett, a co-founder of Werner-Herbison-Padgett, a prominent Chicago construction company, saw the need for a fire training building that could withstand repetitive use in harsh environments and various climates. The result was the introduction of the first-ever metal fire training tower to the market. This was the first major step in the evolution of fire training towers.

The MODx™ Modular Tower Solution for Flexibility

WHP Trainingtowers’ MODx™ modular training tower system represents a leap forward in design and flexibility. What sets MODx™ apart is its fully galvanized structural steel frame, allowing for open floor plans without interior structural walls. This innovation provides unparalleled flexibility, as all walls, doors, and windows are independent of the unit, and easily moved, removed, or reconfigured. The modular footprint and a simple 4-bolt pattern make reconfiguration a breeze, allowing for a wider variety of training exercises.

Patented Padgenite™ Burn Room Lining

At the heart of MODx™ towers lies the exclusive Padgenite™ high-temperature, thermal insulating burn room panels. Introduced by Bernie Padgett himself, Padgenite™ boasts a proven +40-year track record. Unlike traditional burn containers, MODx™ is constructed using all-new materials, featuring a fully galvanized structural steel frame and backed by a 5-year structural warranty. It adheres to ASTM A123 standards, surpassing the 50-year mark on the “time to first maintenance” chart.

The Padgenite™ Interlocking System Redefines Safety and Durability

At WHP, we continue to push the boundaries with our patent-pending Padgenite Interlock™ system. This innovative system combines more durable, less dense tiles with a grid system, creating a flexible air gap of 1.5 to 3 inches. The result is effective heat dissipation, ensuring the walls and ceiling remain protected. With the Padgenite Interlock™ system, the face of the panel can reach temperatures of 1000°F while maintaining a safe 269°F on the opposite side.

Advantages of Padgenite™ Insulating Panels

Padgenite™ insulating panels not only maintain lower temperatures during burns but also offer a range of benefits:

  • Highly durable, low-maintenance insulation
  • Protection for metal, masonry, and concrete structures
  • Suitable for Class A or gas simulator fires
  • Applicable to new construction, retrofit, or repair for damaged buildings
  • Compatible with thermal imaging cameras
  • No “dry out” period required between uses
  • Asbestos-free, calcium silicate product
  • Resistance to mold growth and water absorption
  • Realistic drywall appearance with a reactive response similar to drywall

WHP’s Continuous Commitment to Safety and Innovation

WHP’s commitment to safety and innovation is evident in the series of products we have introduced over the years. Recognizing the importance of meeting the National Fire Protection Association’s stringent structural and egress requirements, we have upgraded our structures to exceed these demands. Some noteworthy innovations include:

Steel Railings, Stairs, and Ladders (2007)

WHP introduced structural steel railings, stairs, and ladders for training towers in 2007. These features, with a hot-dipped galvanized steel finish, not only increased durability but also provided weather resistance, reducing maintenance costs.

Standardized Railings on Roofs and Rappelling Anchor System

To meet OSHA fall protection compliance codes, we standardized railings on roof surfaces. Additionally, we enhanced safety by introducing a rappelling anchor system with forged hot-dipped galvanized swivel-style anchors, setting a new industry standard.

HAZMAT Training Props and Trailer System (2009)

Recognizing the need to mimic real-life situations, we introduced a series of dedicated HAZMAT training props controlled wirelessly. This innovative trailer system for HAZMAT props allows for easy transport to different locations, providing broader access to training for firefighters.

WHP Trainingtowers: A Legacy of Excellence

In a field where innovation directly impacts the safety and effectiveness of emergency responders, WHP Trainingtowers has established a legacy of excellence. From introducing the first metal fire training tower, to pioneering burn room lining systems and modular training solutions, we continue to be industry leaders.

With a relentless focus on safety, strength, and durability, WHP Trainingtowers not only meets industry standards, but consistently exceeds. As the fire training industry evolves, WHP remains at the forefront, collaborating with firefighters nationwide to develop tailored solutions that address their evolving needs.
